Who We Are
First Presbyterian Church is a community of Christian believers called by God through faith in Jesus Christ, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to lift up our hearts in worship and fellowship, lift up our heads in Christian nurture, and lift up our hands in service to others to the glory of God. Our mission reflects the two greatest commandments given to us by Jesus: Love God. Love People.
That statement reflects our core values as a congregation of the Church of Jesus Christ. First Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the Presbytery of Southern Kansas and the Synod of Mid-America. Strong in our Biblical faith and reformed heritage, we believe God calls us to be the Church together because our faith and mission are stronger and more effective when we work together.
Our Biblical call teaches us that discipleship begins in worship of the Sovereign God, with all else flowing from worship into the world. There, we seek to be Christ's hands and heart, inviting all people into our fellowship of believers. Come and worship with us!
Our History
Early pioneers from eight Christian denominations voted on Sunday, July 28, 1872 to organize the First Presbyterian Church. The town incorporated a few weeks later on Aug. 15, 1872.
C.C. Hutchinson donated the property at Sherman Street and Poplar Avenue. As the town grew, the congregation grew. The first church was a small, wood-framed building that still exists elsewhere in Hutchinson and is still being used as a church.
By 1886, FPC’s membership had reached 200 people, and they had outgrown that building. They sold the building and all the contents for $600 and began construction of the beautiful stone building in which the congregation still worships.
